New Lab Intern, Robert Shin!

Robert Shin joins the Lab as an intern for the Spring 2022 semester! Robert is a senior with a concentration in Geographic Information Science and Technology. For his Lab internship, Robert is learning how to use geospatial technologies such as drones and RTK-GNSS to collect topographic and bathymetric data. Robert has a love for fieldwork because he likes to spend his time hunting and fishing in North Carolina wetlands. This has also sparked his interest in wetland conservation and monitoring using geospatial technologies. In particular, wildlife monitoring using satellite transmitters to track the migration and the stopping points of migratory birds. Very cool, Robert! Welcome to the Lab!

Montgomery Botanical Center Internship

Ryann Knowles receives the Summer 2021 GIS Internship at the Montgomery Botanical Center in Coral Gables, FL. As a GIS intern, Ryann extended her field and lab experience to new applications in mapping the current state of the botanical gardens. To assist the center, Ryann measured and tagged different plant species across the 120-acre property, identified saturated soil areas, installed piezometer PVC wells, and tested salinity levels (very important in south FL due to high tide events and rising sea levels). She then used this data collected in the field to create a GIS database and maps that will serve as important decision support tools for the staff at the Botanical Center.
